Human Dignity

We have been learning about the Dignity of the Human Person which is one of the principles of Catholic Social Teaching.    Today we looked at the five of the articles from the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The five articles were:

  1. All rights are important, and are the same for children everywhere! (The child shall enjoy all the rights set forth in this Declaration. Every child, without any exception whatsoever, shall be entitled to these rights, without distinction or discrimination on account of race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status, whether of himself or of his family.)
  2. We have the right to grow up free, safe and healthy.   (The child shall enjoy special protection, and shall be given opportunities and facilities, by law and by other means, to enable him to develop physically, mentally, morally, spiritually and socially in a healthy and normal manner and in conditions of freedom and dignity. In the enactment of laws for this purpose, the best interests of the child shall be the paramount consideration.)
  3. We have the right to a name and nationality.  (The child shall be entitled from his birth to a name and a nationality.)
  4. We have the right to have somewhere to live,  to healthy food, and medicine when we are unwell.  ( The child shall enjoy the benefits of social security. He shall be entitled to grow and develop in health; to this end, special care and protection shall be provided both to him and to his mother, including adequate pre-natal and post-natal care. The child shall have the right to adequate nutrition, housing, recreation and medical services.)
  5. We have the right to get special help if we are disabled in any way.  (The child who is physically, mentally or socially handicapped shall be given the special treatment, education and care required by his particular condition.)

In your opinion, which one of these is the most important?  Why?

Location and Transformation

Being successful in the 21st Century requires people who can be self-motivated and work independently. Helping students develop these skills is part of a teacher’s responsibility. One of the ways we are doing that is through the structure of the unit “Location and Transformation” in Mathematics.

Over the past two weeks, you (the students) have been asked to show us what you already know. Today you will receive this pre-assessment back with a Learning Tracker. You will then code and date (17/7) your Tracker:

  • Smiley face coloured in green if the Learning Intention is ticked.
  • No emotion face coloured in yellow if the Learning Intention is marked 1/2.
  • Sad face coloured in red if the Learning Intention is crossed.
  • Leave blank if you did not attempt the questions.

Once you have completed your Learning Tracker you need to enter the results into a Google Form.

  • Select 0 if your Learning Tracker is yellow, red or blank.
  • Select 1 if your Learning Tracker is green.

Using your Learning Tracker you will then set a goal to work towards independently.  Resources for each Learning Intention are provided on the 56ADG website.  There are also resources provided in the classroom.  Teachers will be running clinic groups based on these Learning Intentions.  If you made an error on your pre-test but know how to do the skill, you could create a Show Me or Educreations video clip to help teach other students.

While you are working independently, use your traffic lights to show us how you are going:

  • Green light showing: I understand what I am doing.
  • Yellow light showing: please check with me, I have some questions.
  • Red light: please help me, I am stuck but have continued with other work I can do.

At the end of this unit we will complete a post-test where you will be able to measure how much you have learnt.

How do you think this will help your learning?
